Gary Oldman Biography
Biography
Gary Oldman was born on 21 March 1958 in New Cross, London, England. He grew up in a working-class family; his father worked as a welder, and his parents separated when he was young. Oldman left school at 16 and worked odd jobs before discovering a passion for acting after watching a stage performance that moved him deeply. He later earned a scholarship to the Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance and graduated in 1979, launching his career in theatre.
Career Life
Oldman’s professional journey began on stage in the late 1970s, performing with repertory theatres and eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company before transitioning into film. He made his film debut in Remembrance (1982) and rose to fame for his raw portrayal of punk-rocker Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy (1986). Known for his chameleon-like acting and ability to master accents and dramatic range, Oldman delivered memorable performances — from corrupted villains to sympathetic heroes. He has played iconic roles such as in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), The Fifth Element (1997), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), and later Darkest Hour (2017), for which he won major awards.
Personal Life
Gary Oldman’s personal life has seen ups and downs. He has been married multiple times — to, among others, Lesley Manville, Uma Thurman, and several others — and is father to three children. In the early 1990s, Oldman struggled with alcoholism and was arrested for drink-driving in 1991; he sought rehab in 1994 and has publicly stated he has been sober since 1997. He is known to value privacy: despite fame, he has maintained a relatively low-key personal life, often avoiding publicity, and once said he prefers “dinner at home every night with my kids.”
